THE TWO TYPES OF ACRYLIC ARE MMA AND EMA

There are 2 types of acrylics which are currently being used in salons across the UK - one SAFE and the other DANGEROUS!

The two types of acrylic are MMA and EMA.
MMA (Metha Methacrylate Monomer) is an illegal acrylic - a chemical compound.
MMA is used in the dental industry for making crowns and also known for being used in the construction industry to hold concrete together.

In the 1970's, MMA was used for acrylic nail enhancements until it was found to be problematic.
It is so strong, that many women suffered with allergic reactions and experience trauma to their nails.
MMA was then declared "a poisonous and deleterious substance" under the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act in 1974 and was taken off the shelves.

Another substance was then created for nail extensions - EMA (Ethyl Methacrylate Monomer) - creating a much more flexible acrylic that is more likely to break under extreme stress to the nail, meaning it is a lot less likely to cause damage to the nail than using MMA acrylic.

Unfortunately, even though MMA was declared "a poisonous and deleterious substance", it is still widely available and some salons and nail technicians are still using it today!
Why? BECAUSE IT IS FAR CHEAPER!!

REASONS TO AVOID MMA ACRYLIC...

DANGEROUS VAPOURS - MMA gives off an extremely strong plastic-like smell. This can be noticed upon entering a salon which uses MMA. The vapours expelled are TOXIC and can cause breathing difficulties.
This is why you may see the nail technicians wearing a mask, ARE YOU EVER OFFERED ONE TO WEAR?

ALLERGIC REACTIONS & SKIN IRRITATIONS - As in many salons which use MMA, you may notice an electric file is also used to scratch/buff the nail surface before MMA is applied. Not only is the damaging to the natural nail bed, but this can also weaken the nail, allowing MMA to penetrate into the skin and then into your bloodstream.
REMEMBER MMA IS HIGHLY TOXIC - would you want this inside your body?
As this is a strong chemical not designed for use on the human body, many people will suffer reactions and skin irritations, such as blisters, sores, itching and swelling!

PLEASE AVOID THESE SALONS IF YOU WANT THE PERFECT, SAFE MANICURE!

WARNING SIGNS OF MMA ACRYLIC BEING USED

1. Extremely strong smell of acrylic upon entering the salon
2. Unmarked Liquid/Powders products being used (all good nail salons will happily display professional products and advise of the contents).
3. Extreme filing of the natural nail before acrylic application usually carried out with electric drills. MMA requires a complete flat surface to be applied.
4. Nail Technicians wearing masks
5. Cheap nail extensions. (professional acrylic enhancements usually cost in excess of £30.00)
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

Please, please, please avoid these salons. Not only are they using MMA acrylic which is not suitable for salon use, the majority of these salons employ illegal immigrants who are tax avoiding too!
They only accept CASH payments and they DON'T speak English. They have no accreditation and insufficient insurance, so if you were to experience a reaction or injury, you would not be covered.
They keep no record of their clients so no-one would ever know you visited the salon and as mentioned above no card payments are taken so you can never be traced to the salon!
